Use our quick guide to window grids to help make decisions regarding the style of your windows. While standard grids are flat and about 3/16” x 5/8”, wider sizes and contoured shapes such as those pictured above are popular in some markets. Grids (or muntins or grilles) are strips of material that simulate smaller panes of glass. The result is an inexpensive alternative to true divided lite windows, which allows for easy cleaning and no muntin maintenance with the same general look. This sub-assembly structure, pictured in part above to reveal the connecting nylon key, is then carefully fitted into an insulating glass unit before it is “sandwiched” together and hermetically sealed.
#Window grids or not windows
Weve since replaced the columns and the front door, but you can see the new windows here. One of these alternatives involves roll-formed and painted hollow aluminum grids that are cut like Lincoln Logs® and fitted together into a sub-assembly. We had considered grids just on the top half of the window because we were afraid that wed dislike looking out of the window, but we feel that the grids actually enhance the view from inside. Since it was increasingly costly to make true divided lite windows out of insulating glass that required muntins to hold them in place in a window sash, alternative processing methods and designs came to be very popular. As float glass processing and quality improved, the resulting larger dimensions of flat glass made it possible to create double-pane glass using big sheets cut to size. Working shutters might not be possible on all windows because of space limitations. Grids are by far the most popular style of grilles.
When the lines the grilles create are purely horizontal and/or vertical, they are referred to as grids.
Window grilles are also known as grids or muntins. Some windows have grids inserted between double pains. Window Grilles narrow strips of wood, vinyl, or metal used to visually separate the glass of a window into individual sections. Your home looks Primarily Mediterranean to me. For many years, TDL’s were the only way to make a window. The grid question should be based on what the style of the home requires.
i havent had grids on the outside of the windows as an adult, but i have had the interior grids which could be snapped out for cleaning and found them to be a pain. Early glass processing only allowed roughly 10” squares of glass to be manufactured, and these wavy little panes of glass were held in place by muntins to build “true divided lites”. for paned windows, i much prefer the grids inside of the window- just for cleaning reasons. Because the two words sound alike, they often get confused. Yet it is possible that your modern home has muntins or mullions on its windows, whether in real or simulated form. Muntins are sections of window sashes that were used in years past to hold small lites of glass in place. Back to Top Muntins and mullions are words that don't exactly roll off of your tongue. Sometimes called “Colonial Lites” because they help give the window an architectural colonial-style appearance, internal grids are designed to simulate old-fashioned muntins.
